Birth is a Human Rights Issue.

Hello. My name is Rose Penwell and I am so happy to see this organization. I am a midwife passionate about improving maternal and infant health by providing compassionate health care in the Philippines. I work with an organization called Mercy in Action. Mercy in Action is a non-profit organization that focuses on the crisis in Maternal/Newborn/Child health care worldwide. We have been establishing and funding free birth centers for poor families in the Philippines since 1992, and to date more than 12,000 babies have been delivered free of charge for the poorest of the poor in Mercy In Action's Birth Centers, and literally tens of thousands of lives have been helped and healed in the medical outreaches.

A Midwifery School, as well as clinical internships, seminars and training retreats are held each year to prepare midwives and nurses to meet the global shortage of skilled birth attendants, and to help primary health care workers prevent unnecessary child deaths. By training midwives, nurses, medics and support personnel to provide compassionate health care throughout the developing world. Please continue to spread the word about the need for maternal/infant healthcare workers.
